DAL MODAK

INGREDIENTS

for stuffing

ghee   2 tbsp
cooked, mashed chana dal   1 cup( pressure cook the dal with just enough water, grind in mixie)
sugar  1/2 cup
nuts crushed & saffron  3 tbsp
kaskas/ poppy seeds   3 tbsp

for covering dough

maida/ all purpose flour  1 cup
rice flour   1 cup
ghee  2 tbsp
salt a pinch
water as needed to make dough

METHOD

for stuffing
heat ghee, add mashed dal( it should be thick). mix well, cook for a minute
add sugar, mix well, as sugar melts, add nuts, kaskas mix & cook on low flame, stirring continuously till the mixture becomes almost dry( as it cools it gets dry), cool it

For covering
mix the flours, salt, ghee well, then add water little by little to make a soft dough.

To Make Modak
roll the dough into small flat rounds, put stuffing, gather the dough from side little by little, fold as you do, so you get a nice design. make sure that it is well covered, no stuffing is seen outside.
steam in a steamer/ cooker by by keeping on a lightly greased plate, make sure the water is already boiling, steam for 10 minutes.
remove, cool, ready for pooja !
