This Traditional Maharashtrian Kulith Soup Has Been A Monsoon Staple For Generations

With the arrival of the monsoon, seasonal illnesses like colds, coughs and the flu become more common. Traditionally, many households prepared Hulga Madga, a warm kulith (horse gram) soup believed to help maintain body warmth during the rainy season.

Ingredients

4 tbsp hulga (horse gram/kulith) flour,

3 to 4 tbsp jaggery,

1 tsp dry ginger powder,

½ tsp black pepper powder,

½ tsp nutmeg-cardamom powder,

2 to 3 cups water,

1 tbsp ghee,

Chopped cashews and almonds (optional)

Preparations

Take the hulga flour in a bowl and gradually add a little water. Mix well to form a smooth, thin paste, ensuring there are no lumps. Set it aside.

Heat 2 to 3 cups of water in a pan. Once it is warm, add jaggery, dry ginger powder and black pepper powder. Stir until the jaggery dissolves completely, then bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

Reduce the flame to low. Slowly pour the hulga flour paste into the boiling liquid while stirring continuously. This helps prevent lumps and creates a smooth consistency.

Let the mixture cook on a low flame for 3 to 4 minutes. As it cooks, the soup will gradually thicken. Once ready, add the nutmeg-cardamom powder and switch off the heat.

Pour the hot Madga into a bowl and top it with a spoonful of ghee. You can also garnish it with chopped cashews and almonds for extra flavour and richness.

My home-made cough syrup and another for phlegm- sure relief

My simplest and easiest cough syrup is

apple cider vinegar 4 tbsp
honey 4 tbsp
water 4 tbsp
dry ginger pdr 1/4- 1/2 tsp

mix all well, keep in a bottle, ready to use. This works like miracle for  m and others who tried various syrups without any remedy, asked them if they wish to try mine. After trying, felt happy to have got rid of their bouts of cough.

My grandson also felt relieved, as one night, sleeping with me, when he started coughing, he asked, "  grandma, can you give me your cough syrup, I said yes". Having that 1 tsp of it, he slept peacefully.

In case you've phlegm, the simplest remedy is

take about 250 ml  of milk
turmeric pdr 1/8 tsp
garlic pearls 2 big/ 3 small chop fine / grate

put the mixture in a slightly big vessel, put a long spoon, simmer it, stirring now and then, let the mixture reduce to 1/4 its quantity, add sugar, drink it hot, eat garlic too. Repeat for 3-4 days, depending on the amount of phlegm you've. It also gives relief from wheezing.

I've told this remedy to quite a few people, including m maid, who all had good relief from phlegm without any medication ! Surprises, yes it works.

There are some who say that they don't like garlic, I say treat it like medicine, only when it is being cooked you get the smell, not when you drink and eat it. The more it reduces, better the taste.
