15 Useful Things You Can Do With Aluminum Foil

1. Soften Brown Sugar

If your brown sugar has turned into a rock-solid lump, just grab a piece of tin foil! Wrap the brown sugar clump in tin foil, put it in your oven, and bake it at 300°F for 5 minutes. The heat will soften up the brown sugar, and it will come out ready to use!

2. Pipe Frosting

There’s nothing like piped frosting to make your cake or cupcakes extra special, but you don’t need a special piping bag to do it! Use a sheet of tin foil to form your own disposable piping bag.

3. Shine Silverware

Use aluminum foil to restore the shine to your silverware! Place a sheet of tin foil at the bottom of a baking dish, then set your silverware on the foil. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of salt and 2 teaspoons of baking soda over the silverware, then pour several cups of hot water into the dish. Let the silverware soak for 5 minutes, then remove, rinse, and admire the shine! :-)

4. Clean Cast Iron

Use a balled-up piece of tin foil to scrub away crusty baked-on messes in your cast iron pans.

5. Sharpen Scissors

If your scissors are starting to feel a bit dull, you can sharpen them with tin foil. Take a piece of tin foil and fold it in half at least 3 times. Use the scissors to make several cuts on the foil, and your scissors will be noticeably sharper afterward!

6. Protect Pie Crust

You can use tin foil to protect the edges of your pie crust and prevent them from burning in the oven. One way to do it is to use it preventatively. Just wrap the edges of your pie with tin foil at the beginning of the baking process, then remove the foil halfway through.
Alternatively, you could put the tin foil on near the end of the baking process. This can be helpful if the edges of the crust seem to be browning faster than the rest of the crust.

7. Foil Funnel

Funnels are one of those kitchen tools that you’re pretty sure you can live without… until the moment that you wish you had one! If you ever find yourself in this situation, you can improvise by fashioning a funnel out of a piece of tin foil. Just form a cone shape with the foil, and fold the edges over to help keep the shape.

8. Foil Packet Dinners

Making foil packet recipes is one of the best ways to use foil in the kitchen. One of my favorite foil packet recipes is salmon filets cooked with honey and lemon, which turn out perfectly moist and flaky thanks to those foil pouches! (And don’t worry, cooking with tin foil is perfectly safe!)

9. Keep Food Warm

Tin foil is especially handy for keeping things warm, thanks to its reflective surface. If one part of your meal is ready before the rest of it, just wrap it up in tin foil to help keep it warm while you finish off the rest of the food.

10. Prevent Messes

Tin foil is a great tool for preventing baked-on messes. If you’re baking something the may splatter or drip, just line a baking sheet with tin foil and place on the rack below whatever you’re baking. If your dish bubbles over, it will land on the foil-lined sheet and make cleanup quick and easy!

11. Take It Camping

Tin foil makes a useful addition to your regular camping supplies. Many foods can be cooked or heated through simply by wrapping them in tin foil and tossing them in a campfire! You can also use tin foil as a reflective signaling material if you happen to get lost.

12. Light It Up

If you’re starting seeds indoors, they can usually use all the extra light they can get! One way to amplify the natural light is to line a shoebox with tin foil, and place your seedlings into the box. The foil will reflect the light (and heat!) onto the seedlings and help them get started.

13. Painting Helper

Taping off doorknobs when painting can be a total pain. Save yourself some time and effort by wrapping the knobs in tin foil! It’s easy to mold the foil onto a door knob, and you can even reuse it if you don’t end up getting any paint on it.

14. Freeze It

Heavy-duty tin foil makes a great material for freezer storage because it doesn’t allow air to pass through. It will keep the flavors in, and the smells from other foods out! Wrap and freeze breads, casseroles, and more.

15. Easy Cleanup

One of the best ways to use tin foil is to protect large, hard-to-wash pans from greasy messes. Line the bottom of your roasting pan before roasting a turkey or pot roast, then toss out the foil when you’re done. Your roasting pan can go right back into the cupboard, rather than taking up your entire sink for hours while it soaks!

Three Tips For a Juicy Burger

Who doesn't love food that is grilled? Primarily when it comes to burgers, or literally any meat. Grilled foods taste so incredible making us want to grill just about anything every day. Yet no matter how amazing you are at grilling, there are always a set of tips and tricks to take your grilling to the next level. Check out the tips below, ensuring that you take your grilled goodies from great to gourmet:

1. Better (and Safer) Grill Cleaning
Have you heard about the dangers of grill brushes? Those metal bristle brushes that you typically use to clean off your grill can sometimes fall off the brush and stay on the grill getting lodged into your food. It is, of course, unsafe to ingest one and for this reason, experts have come up with a new way of cleaning your grill, using aluminum foil. Simply crumple up a piece of aluminum foil and pick it up in between tongs, scrubbing down the hot grill with the foil. This will get the crud off.

2. Perfect Kebabs
Kebabs are versatile and fun. But what we hate is how those wooden skewers tend to get burned or light on fire when they are cooling on the grill. To avoid this, bear in mind this simple trick: Simply soak the skewers in a bowl of water for 15 to 20 minutes before cooking to avoid any dangerous flames. It is also recommended that you use two skewers per kebab to ensure that they don't slip through the grates.
3. Iced Burgers
It may seem odd, and possibly disgusting and unnecessary to put ice cubes on your burgers. But, we promise you, it isn't. While burgers on the grill are amazing, what you want are juicy burgers on the grill. Achieving the perfect burger is hard, however, with this brilliant trick, you'll manage. When your raw patties are cooking on the grill simply put a pad of butter on top of them. Or, for a healthier option, use an ice cube. This will melt into the burger as it cooks making it your juiciest burger ever.

Easy Way To Remove Pesticides From Veggies

It is quite possible that the vegetables you and I buy from the local vegetable market, are laced with pesticides. Consumers are increasingly becoming concerned that these harmful chemicals are present in a worryingly high dose. Before cutting or cooking any vegetable, we are taught to thoroughly wash them with tap water, so that these chemicals get washed away, making the vegetable safe for consumption.
However, a study  found that tap water was ineffective in ridding the vegetable of excess pesticide residue. So, a more effective method which can be used to clean vegetables at home.

In the study, he found that tap water was only 17-39% effective in ridding vegetables of pesticide residue. In comparison, mixing 160 ml of acetic acid (commonly found in vinegar or bought over the counter) with 4gms of baking soda and lemon juice from 4 lemons in 4 litres of water, followed by washing the vegetables with tap water could reduce the amount of pesticide residue in vegetables by 55-76%.
“The effectiveness of Veggy wash was checked on five pesticides—Dimethoate, lambda-Cyhalothrin, Flubendiamide, and Profenophos which are widely used by farmers on the tomato, a vegetable that finds high usage in Indian cooking as well as in salads for raw consumption. While the tomato was the main focus of the published study, these five pesticides find wide usage in other vegetables as well,” reported.

One major pesticide, Profenofos, which is used in a variety of vegetables, is listed as ‘moderatley hazardous’ by the World Health Organization, while the Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee, a body under the Government of India, has not recommended its use.

7 Simple Ways to Clean Kitchen Items

Kitchen is one room in the home which is most used, either for cooking or eating. But sadly, it is also one of the most difficult place to clean due to the grease, spills that happen around it. Despite regular cleaning, there are some items that do not get cleaned as well. While there are multiple ways for you to clean everything, some work better than others. Below, we have gathered seven of the most irritating kitchen items to clean, offering two different tricks for some. Take a look:

1. Burnt Pan
How many times have you ended up with leftover food that has burned on your pans? Pan gunk can be quite hard to remove. But some baking soda, cream of tartar and dish soap, ought to do the trick, leaving your pan look like new again.
A second alternative for getting the gunk off pans and other kitchen items is to use baking soda, without the dish soap and the cream of tartar, in favor of hydrogen peroxide. The reaction of these two ingredients together will get that gunk up in no time, leaving you with sparkling clean pans.
2. Wood Cutting Boards
Keep your wood cutting boards clean by using a lemon and some coarse salt. Scrubbing the board using both. While it may seem unusual at first, it is the best way to clean those wood boards. Cleaning the boards with too much water can cause them damage while using harsh cleaning chemicals can sink into the wood. For this reason, it is best that you avoid both.
3. Greasy kitchen dust
It may be hard to reach the top of the cabinets or the fridge, dust loves to accumulate up there and the easiest way to do so is with wax paper, as opposed to a step ladder or long-handled duster. Simply line the top of your cabinets with wax paper causing the dust to accumulate there, making cleaning up easy.

4. Stainless steel
If you've got a stainless steel fridge you may notice how easy it is for it to get smudged and look grimy. A general washing can leave streaks and may not eliminate fingerprints. To keep your fridge spotless you can use an unlikely method: Pledge - which doesn't just work to clean and polish wood. In fact, pledge is great for stainless steel as well.
If you are unsure about using a wood cleaner on stainless steel, you can use white distilled vinegar, which also works wonders at removing build up, streaks and fingerprints and is cheaper than Pledge. However, it may not shine as much.
5. Hard Water Stains
When something comes in contact with water it can develop hard water stains. Things like faucets and bathroom fixtures are more prone to these stains than others, however, anything that has water drying or sitting on it is susceptible. If you just soak the item in vinegar for a while, those hard water stains will wipe off easily.
However, there are some things which cannot be soaked in vinegar as easily. For such items, use a lemon instead. All that you will need to do is rub half a lemon on the stains, leaving the citric acid to do the rest.
6. Fridge Shelves
Want to keep nasty spills and sticky messed off your fridge shelves? Line them with plastic wrap or Press N Seal. You will just need to change it out every now and then preventing you from having to scrub those shelves or deal with leakages.
If the idea of using lining is not to your liking, you can get reusable fridge liners, like coasters and place them in your fridge as you line the shelves. They work in the same way and periodically you will need to wash them instead of tossing them out.
7. Microwave
It's impossible to cook in a microwave without it getting dirty. Food will generally splatter leaving a mess in the microwave. But there is an easy way to go about cleaning it and removing any gunk. Just put a lemon and some water in the microwave and switch it on, allowing any food scraps to loosen up.
If you do not have any lemons on hand you can use vinegar. However, one of the cons of using this method is the smell of vinegar in your kitchen afterward. Nevertheless, it's a lot better than having to spend a lot of time scrubbing your microwave.
