10 Little-Known Uses For Your Dishwasher

Are you only using your dishwasher to clean dishes? If so, you’re seriously missing out. The truth is that the dishwasher is a real multitasker - it can clean and disinfect all items in your home, and it can even be used to cook foods. In that regard, it’s not so different from other kitchen appliances like the microwave or even a rice cooker, as we’ve specified in the article - 12 Unexpected Uses of Home Appliances. Wait no more and expand your dishwasher’s potential with these genius but little-known hacks!

1. Rinse fresh produce   Dishwasher Hacks potatoes
We’re all a little more concerned about disinfection and cleaning these days. Like many people, you may be wondering how to clean the fresh produce you just purchased at the supermarket or the farmer’s market without spending an entire hour on hand-washing each fruit and vegetable.

Here’s a pretty clever solution - just rinse them in the dishwasher. To do so, place each type of fruit and vegetable strategically: softer and more fragile foods like tomatoes or grapes should go on the top rack, whereas studier items, such as potatoes and oranges can be placed on the bottom rack. Rinse the foods by switching the dishwasher to the cold setting and running only the rinse cycle. Avoid using detergent when you’re rinsing produce.

2. Disinfect toys
Dishwasher Hacks legos
Washing kids’ toys such as legos and plastic figurines by hand can become a real project, a project that will consume a big portion of your day. Still, it has to be done since kids can and will chew and roll around in their toys, whether or not they’re dirty and covered in bacteria. Luckily, you can make the dishwasher get the disinfecting done even better than you ever could.

Here’s how to do it: put the smallest toys in the silverware basket and the medium toys on the top rack. Bigger toys should go on the bottom rack. Do NOT use the highest heat cycle or the heat-dry setting because both of these could damage or melt plastic toys. It’s safer to use a light wash cycle. Extra tip: you can also use the same directions to wash pet toys in the dishwasher.

3. Prepare tender fish

Do you hate the way your oven overcooks fish no matter what? According to a Real Simple recipe, you can prepare soft and tender fish filets using the dishwasher. The results are similar to when you’re steaming fish. To make fish in your dishwasher, take two fish filets (we used salmon) and season them with lemon, salt, pepper, and a little olive oil.

The next step is crucial - seal the salmon filets airtight in aluminum foil. It’s best to use plenty of foil and seal each fish filet individually. Finally, put the two foil packets on the top rack and run the dishwasher on a normal cycle. Do not use soap.
4. Ripen avocados in no time
Dishwasher Hacks avocados
Avocados can take awfully long to ripen. If you need to ripen an avocado fast - and we mean really fast, i.e. in a matter of a few hours - use your dishwasher. Place the unripe avocados on the top rack of the dishwasher a run a regular cycle. This is a well-known chef trick used in restaurants.

5. Keep the dishes warm
Dishwasher Hacks plates
If a specific meal you’re preparing is best served on a warm plate, you can use the dishwasher to keep them warm. While some dishwashers have a plate-warming setting, every regular dishwasher placed on the heat/dry setting has the same effect.

6. Make steamed vegetables
Dishwasher Hacks asparagus
Steaming veggies can be quite tedious, which is a shame because they’re so healthy. But we found a really simple hack that will make steaming veggies super easy, and it involves a dishwasher. To prepare steamed vegetables in the dishwasher, you will need a Mason jar.

Take your vegetables — asparagus, broccoli, and green beans work especially well for this method— and put them in the jar. Add 1 cup of water, lemon, butter, and any herbs and spices of your choice into the jar, and then seal it shut. Place the jar on the top rack and run the dishwasher on a normal cycle. Et voila, you have a serving of perfectly-cooked and seasoned steamed veggies!

7. Cook lasagna Dishwasher
Dishwasher Hacks lasagna
If for whatever reason the dishwasher is the only tool you can use to cook an entire lasagna, it’s totally possible! But you will need to choose a watertight container to do it. Just like the fish recipe, aluminum foil is a good choice, for example. But you’ll need to use plenty of foil and fold it up tightly to ensure that no water can leak through in the cooking process. Place the lasagna on the top rack and turn on the dishwasher on the normal washing cycle without any soap.

8. Clean makeup brushes and hair combs
Dishwasher Hacks makeup brushes
Washing hair combs, hairbrushes, or makeup brushes is another tedious task that needs to be done on a regular basis. Otherwise, the dirty makeup brushes can cause eye irritation and make your skin break out, and they will be less effective at applying your makeup, too.

Likewise, dirty hair combs and brushes can cause scalp irritation, dandruff, and other scalp problems. So it’s a really good idea to clean these items at least once a month, and the dishwasher can do the job for you. Simply place the brushes and combs in the silverware basket and wash on the gentle cycle, preferable without using soap.

9. Wash flipflops and hats

Even though many shoes and hats can be safely cleaned in the washing machine, they can become misshapen in the process. So, instead of washing things like flip flops and baseball caps in the washing machine, you could just toss them in the dishwasher. Just don’t mix them with dirty dishes because that’s unsanitary.

10. Keep food warm
Dishwasher Hacks dish covered in foil
Need to keep a certain food warm while also preparing another dish in the oven? Why not let your dishwasher do the job? Cover the dish with some foil to seal in the heat, and place the dishwasher on the heat/dry setting. This cycle uses no water, and it will keep your food nice and warm while you’re busy finishing up the dinner.

WOnderful Uses of Hydrogen peroxide in the kitchen

We normally think that hydrogen peroxide is used only for medicinal purposes. But, they're used right from cleaning wounds, to disinfecting your fruits and veggies, fridge, dish washer and more. Continue to read below, the various uses, it will sure amaze you.

1. Scour Burnt Pots

Sometimes you have the heat up too high, or you’re using an absolutely ancient pan, and before you know it your cookware is covered in burnt spots. Before you destroy your hands with steel wool or scouring pads, try this DIY remedy.

Make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, and apply that to the burnt, dirty areas. Let it marinate for a bit and then use warmish water to scrub it away. The stain should come off pretty easily, but if it doesn’t, simply repeat the process, leaving the paste on a little longer the next time.

2. Detoxify Fruits and Veggies

Just because you didn’t pay extra for organic produce doesn’t mean you have to infest the harmful pesticides generally used on fruits and veggies. Water alone might not do the trick, but this hydrogen peroxide solution sure will.

Spray your produce with some food-grade peroxide, let the mixture sit on the food for a minute or two, and then rinse and dry. Next, spray the produce with some vinegar; combined, the two agents work detoxifying wonders!

3. Kill Household Mold

Not only is mold unsightly and gross, but it can cause so many different health problems, too. Depending on the severity of your mold problem, you may need to call in some specialists.

But if you recognize what you see as your average, run-of-the-mill household mold, you can use some hydrogen peroxide to get rid of it — and treat the area to prevent mold from growing in the future!

4. Make Your Dishwasher More Efficient

Sure, dishwashers are great in theory — when they work! But if you don’t take care of your dishwasher, clean it regularly, and stay up to date on its maintenance, your dishes will come out less than lustrous. Before you run off to buy every product on the planet, give this hydrogen peroxide hack a try.

Add a few drops of peroxide to your regular dishwasher detergent, and your dishes will come out cleaner than ever. It’s that simple.

5. DIY Pesticide

While we all love the summertime, it’s also the time of year when we remember how annoying some pests can be. Whether it’s mosquitoes attracted to our blood or ants attracted to that juice spill that wasn’t thoroughly cleaned, the little bugs are a nuisance. You can create an all-natural, DIY “pesticide” with just some water and hydrogen peroxide. Add some peroxide to a spray bottle full of water and spray the solution wherever required. It’ll help keep bugs away.

6. Remove Rust

Hydrogen peroxide can be used to remove rust from hammers or other tools in just minutes. Pour some hydrogen peroxide into a small container and let the rusted metal soak in it for a few minutes, according to HomeQuicks.com tutorial. Then just take some steel wool or a brush and scrub.

Additionally, you can mix borax with hydrogen peroxide to create a handy cleaning solution.

7. Disinfect Dishcloths and Sponges

Kitchen dishrags and sponges might as well be called germ magnets with the amount of dirt and grime these kitchen tools pick up. However, a little hydrogen peroxide can get them clean quick… and maybe even lengthen their respective lifespans.

Simply spray your rags and sponges with hydrogen peroxide while they’re in the sink. This will kill a vast majority of the germs they’re harboring. In addition, cleaning them this way will also allow you to fully wash them less often, meaning they’ll stay together longer.

8. Clean Kids' Toys

Babies and toddlers have a habit of putting, well, everything in their mouths. That’s why many advise wiping down all their toys – as well as play areas and etc. – with hydrogen peroxide regularly.
Added Bonus: It’s safer to use hydrogen peroxide on children’s belongings than store-bought cleaners, as it won’t cause the type of lung irritations that many commercial cleaners will

9. Disinfect Coolers and Lunchboxes

It’s easy to overlook tiny food particles in coolers and lunchboxes since they build up slowly over time. To combat this, simply spray down the inside of the lunchbox/cooler with hydrogen peroxide, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it down with a cloth or paper towel.

We’d also advise keeping household pets out of lunch boxes and coolers, but that’s less hack and more common sense…we’d hope.

10. Sanitize Meat Cutting Boards

Do you have a specific cutting board in the kitchen that is used mostly for meat? If so, cleaning with soap and water is always a necessity, but even that doesn’t always get rid of all the potentially harmful germs borne from meat. If you really want to make sure that cutting board has been disinfected thoroughly, soak it in hydrogen peroxide after washing it with soap and water. This will make sure all those germs are dead and gone before putting the board away in the cabinet.

11. Disinfect Reusable Shopping Bags

You’re doing your part to help reduce your carbon footprint and cut down on disposable items. That’s why you have those handy reusable shopping bags in the car or kitchen for every time you go to the store. But you should be treating them just as you would any other surface that comes in close contact with food. Germs can be left behind and those breed dangerous bacteria. Use hydrogen peroxide to clean the inside of reusable shopping bags to make sure all those pesky germs are taken care of.

12. Disinfect Your Refrigerator

Every once in a while the cleaning bug hits you and you do a deep clean of the household refrigerator. It’s so easy to miss little spills and other food stuffs that might get left behind in there, which can harden and become difficult to clean, but also breed nasty bacteria. While soap and water is the obvious answer, you should also wipe everything down with a solution of hydrogen peroxide and warm water to help kill all the germs the soap might not eradicate.
