Left-over rice cheela

Very often rice is left-over, as it impossible to cook the exact amount you need each day, as some days, we're more hungry, other days, hardly wish to eat anything, as it depends on many factors, if you had a snack, or what type of food you had for lunch, if the lunch was heavy, then you prefer to skip dinner at times. Then surely rice will be leftover. At the cost of rice, one can never afford to throw away any food. I consider wasting food a serious crime, as millions die of hunger in his world, please do your bit to feed the hungry, if you've leftover food or turn it into a meal for the next day. At times, I used to have little of sambar, little of rasam/ kootu ( dal with veges cooked in gravy), some dry veges leftover, convert it to a delicious meal ! Yes shall post it in my next recipe.

Ingredients

leftover rice 1 cup

besan 1 tbsp

rava/ suji 1 tbsp

water as needed to blend it to a smooth batter

onion 1 medium finely chopped

curry leaves 2 sprigs finely chopped

green chilies finely chopped as per taste

salt to taste

ginger grated 1 tsp

coriander leaves finely chopped 2 tbsp

grated cheese as needed ( optional)

oil to cook

Preparations

in a mixer jar, blend rice, besan suji adding water to a fine smooth batter, like for dosa.

add finely chopped, onion, green chilies, ginger, curry and coriander leaves along with salt to the batter and mix well.

heat a tawa, smear little oil, pour a big serving spoon of the batter on the tawa spread it evenly, drizzle little oil all around.

once you find the edges getting crisp, flip it, drizzle little oil if needed

if you love cheese, you may add some cheese all over the cheela, fold it, press it down for few seconds on both sides so the cheese can melt.

serve hot with milagai podi, chutney of your choice !

Enjoy the healthy breakfast. Never waste food, be innovative.

Tips- you may add some grated carrot, finely chopped spinach, mushroom as per your wish and available n your kitchen at that time.

Helthy cheela

Cheela is like a pancake, salty, it may resemble a dosa, but yellowish, a little like adai , a well-known South-Indian snack-healthy as well. It is cooked on a tava like dosa. It is basically made with dals.

Ingredients

whole green moong dal 1/2 cup

chana dal 1/2 cup

arhar / tuvar dal  1/2 cup

black urad/ white urad dal 1/2 cup

salt to taste

besan   2 tbsp

green chilies to taste

ginger 1 " chopped

jeera/ cumin pdr 1 tsp

turmeric pdr 1/4 tsp

beetroot grated 2-3 tbsp

carrot grated  2-3 tbsp

cabbage grated  2-3 tbsp

onion finely chopped 2-3 tbsp ( optional)

you may use spring onion too

finely chopped coriander leaves  2 tbsp

oil for cooking

Method

wash and soak the dals together for 3 hours, grind with ginger and green chilies.

add salt, turmeric pdr, besan, jeera pdr and mix well.

the batter should be like idli or uttapam batter, if too thick add little water

mix salt and if needed little chaat masala with grated veges

heat a heavy tava on gas, once hot smear little oil, reduce heat, spread the batter evenly

spread the grated veges on top, lightly press them down with the ladle, put little oil all over on top

once the bottom has become golden, turn it over, press it down, once the bottom gets brown take it out

repeat with the remaining batter.

serve hot with chutney of your choice or milagai podi also known as gun powder by some !

You can also mix the grated veges with the batter, depending on how many cheelas may be needed !

NOTE- those who want more flavour, after you flip over, spread some grated cheese or cheese slice on top, cover it, cheese will melt, serve hot like a pizza !l

Sooji / semolina cheela / pancakes

 Sooji Cheela - Weight-loss friendly mid-day snack

  • To make sooji cheela, take one cup of sooji and add it to a mixing bowl. Add 1/4th cup of besan to help the batter hold together. Add chopped onions, tomatoes, capsicum or any other vegetables that you would like. Add salt, according to taste. Add a green chili finely chopped. Add red chili powder, but it is optional.
  • Mix all the ingredients well and then add water, a little at a time. Add enough water to give the batter a runny consistency.
  • Heat a pan on the stove, preferably a non-stick base. Add a few drops of oil to grease the pan. Take a dollop of the batter, and put it on the pan, flattening it.
  • Once it is cooked on one side, flip it and cook it on the other.
  • Serve hot. You can serve the cheela with green coriander chutney or ketchup.

How the mid-day snack can aid weight loss

Sooji is known to fill you up, and it will help to curb appetite. The cheela can also be eaten as a healthy breakfast. Veggies and minimum spices are a great way to have a light but healthy snack. The vegetables add fiber and nutrition to the snack. Chutneys, apart from being tasty, as also very digestive and will help to keep stomach problems at bay, and aid in weight loss.

The best part about the snack is that you can make the mix in the morning, when you prepare other meals. This will help you save time between work and will only take 5 minutes to cook and eat the snack. Make sure you do not mix water in the batter, and only do so when you have to cook the cheelas.
