How to Store Honeydew So It Stays Juicy and Sweet

Sweet and slightly floral, honeydew is a summer fruit favorite. When shopping at the grocery store, look for a honeydew melon that boasts a creamy colored rind and a smooth and waxy skin that gives slightly when pressed. Ripe honeydew should also smell sweet and sound hollow when you tap it with your fingers.

Once you’ve got a ripe honeydew (or two) in hand, serve it in a bright, juicy salad like this Ginger-Lime Melon Salad, on its own in wedges, or draped with thinly sliced prosciutto (just for a few ideas!). Keep reading to learn how to store honeydew so you can make the most of this refreshing, versatile fruit.

How to Store a Whole Honeydew

Store a whole honeydew (particularly not-quite-ripe honeydew) at room temperature on the countertop. Stored this way, honeydew will have time to ripen and will last for three to five days. Alternatively, store an entire honeydew in the refrigerator, where it will stay good for one to two weeks, depending on its original ripeness.

How to Store Cut Honeydew

Due to its high water content, honeydew spoils relatively quickly once cut. It’s best to store cut honeydew in an airtight food storage container in the refrigerator to keep it as fresh as possible. Stored this way, cut honeydew should last for about three to five days.

Can You Freeze Honeydew?

Yes, you can certainly freeze honeydew. However, it’s important to note that freezing changes the melon’s texture dramatically. Frozen honeydew doesn’t work in a fresh salad, for example, but it can definitely be used in smoothies, sorbets, popsicles, and juices. You can store your honeydew in the freezer indefinitely, but the melon will be at its best for about a year.

To freeze honeydew, follow the steps below:

  1. Remove the honeydew rind and chop the melon into pieces.
  2. Freeze the pieces in a single layer on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet for a few hours.
  3. Once the pieces are frozen solid, transfer them to an airtight container and return the container to the freezer.
