Corn silk

  

For most of us this word corn silk is something strange, is it a type of silk material is what comes to mind, isn't it?

Well, this is neither a silk, only the name is deceptive, it is the silken thread that one finds when you buy fresh corn and peel it. The colour of the corn silk can vary from cream to brown, but it is highly beneficial for those who have kidney problems. 

Corn silk is a natural source of Vitamin K and potassium and is often used as a home remedy to help those with symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTI), kidney stones and gout. Corn silk strands can be used to make tea or tincture. Simply pull the strands off the  corn ears. These can be stored by drying them on a plate or paper towel to dry. It can be stored in air-tight containers.


To make corn tea-

Ingredients

corn silk chopped 1 tbsp roughly

boiling water 1 cup

Pour boiling water over the chopped corn silk and let it steep for 15-20 minutes or until cool enough to drink. Strain, can be sweetened with honey to taste is you prefer.

General recommendations for adults is up to 1 cup of tea 2-3 times a day, avoiding having at late evenings, as it leads to more urination.


To make a tincture

Fill a small jar about 1/4 to 1.3 full of fresh, chopped corn silk. Fill the rest with a high proof of drinkable alcohol, some use 100 proof of

Cap this and let this infuse in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking occasionally, strain.

Adult dose around 1/4- 1/2 tsp , several times a  day. ( Mix with a spoonful of raw homey for higher patient compliance and tastiness).  Shelf life of corn silk  tincture of well over a year.
