Homemade wonton soup

Wonton soup is a beloved classic in Chinese cuisine, known for its delicate dumplings floating in a flavorful broth. This comforting dish is not only delicious but also surprisingly simple to make at home.

INGREDIENTS: FOR THE WONTONS:

1/2 pound ground pork ( sub. tofu, jack-fruit, black beans, mushrooms, tempeh, lentils)

1/4 cup finely chopped shrimp ( sub-Soy curls (essentially just dehydrated strips of soy protein) are cheap, versatile, and easy to cook with. While they are initially quite bland taste-wise, they are great at soaking up flavors when you marinade them, making them the ideal blank canvas for vegan shrimp.2 cloves garlic, minced

2 green onions, finely chopped

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp cornstarch

1/2 tsp grated ginger

24 wonton wrappers

FOR THE SOUP:

  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Chopped cilantro and additional green onions for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

 - In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped shrimp, minced garlic, chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, and grated ginger. Mix until well combined.

–  Lay out a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Place about a teaspoon of the filling in the center of the wrapper. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water and fold it over the filling to form a triangle.

Press the edges to seal, making sure there are no air bubbles trapped inside. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling until all the wontons are assembled.

– : Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully add the wontons to the boiling water, a few at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pot.

– : Cook the wontons for 4-5 minutes, or until they float to the surface and are cooked through. Remove them from the water with a slotted spoon and set aside.

–  In a separate pot, heat the chicken or vegetable broth over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped green onions, and sliced mushrooms, if using.

Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste, and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

–  Ladle the hot soup into bowls and add a few cooked wontons to each bowl. Garnish with chopped cilantro and additional chopped green onions, if desired. And serve the wonton soup hot and enjoy!

This homemade wonton soup is a delicious and comforting dish that’s perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re craving a cozy meal on a cold winter’s night or looking to impress guests at your next dinner party, this recipe is sure to hit the spot.
