When we're small, more than the normal sweet/ coconut pooranam kolakkatai, everyones' favourite was spicy, crispy amini kolakattai with the lft over mavu.
Now all you need is avil, thick. thin variety.
INGREDIENTS
avil / flattened rice/ poha 1 1/2 cups
salt and chilies to taste
oil for frying
mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
chana dal 2 tsp
urad dal 2 tasp
curry leaves finely chopped 2 tsp
METHOD
wash well avail, if thick variety, you may need to soak in very little water for about 20 minutes.
If using thin variety, just wash well, drain and keep aside
Take half the quantity of avil, green chilies, grind to a fine paste without adding any water.
Mix the ground avil, with the rest of the avil, mix well adding salt to taste.
With little oil in your hands, roll it into small balls.
In your idli steamer/ pressure cooker, put water, cover the idli plate with a wet cloth, put the rolled balls, cover with the cloth and steam for 5 minutes only.
Remove and cool.
In a kadai, add oil, mustard seeds, then add the dals, once golden, add curry leaves and hing little, add the steamed balls, fry well till crisp on low heat.
OPTIONS- you may add finely chopped onion with the ground avil and mix.
2nd- after tempering with dals, add onion, fry well, add tomatoes, chili pdr, fry well, till the gravy thickens, then add the steamed balls , fry and serve.
