Fasting This Sawan? Don't Buy Kuttu Ka Atta Before Checking These 3 Things

Kuttu ka atta (buckwheat flour) is a fasting staple during Sawan, commonly used to make puris, cheelas and pakoras. It is nutritious and keeps you full for longer. However, adulterated flour can cause food poisoning, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Before you buy it, learn these simple ways to check if it is pure.

How Is Kuttu Ka Atta Adulterated? During the fasting season, the demand for kuttu flour rises sharply. Unscrupulous sellers may mix it with cheaper ingredients such as refined flour (maida), arrowroot powder, water chestnut flour (singhada atta) or other starches. While the flour may look similar, its quality and safety can be compromised.

Check colour and texture:  Pure kuttu flour is usually light brown or greyish in colour. It feels soft, slightly grainy and mildly sticky when touched. If the flour appears unusually white or feels rough and powdery, it could be adulterated.

Water Test: Mix 2-3 teaspoons of flour in a bowl of water. Pure kuttu flour settles gradually at the bottom, while adulterated flour may dissolve easily or leave a whitish layer floating in the water. This quick test can help you identify impurities before cooking.

Oil Test: Another easy home check is the oil test. Mix a small amount of flour with edible oil. Pure kuttu flour blends smoothly without forming lumps. If the mixture develops thick clumps, it may indicate the presence of added starches or other adulterants.

If you are buying packaged kuttu flour, don't rely on the label alone. Always look for: FSSAI licence mark, brand name, manufacturing date, expiry date and properly sealed packaging. These checks can help ensure you're buying a safer product for your fast

FSSAI Flags Dabur's '100% Purity' Claims: 7 Simple Ways To Check If Your Ghee Is Pure

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed Dabur India to stop selling products carrying "100%" purity claims, saying such labels are ambiguous and unverifiable. The order covers products including honey, coconut oil and cow ghee, putting the spotlight on how consumers judge purity while shopping. While no home test can definitively certify that a ghee is pure—that requires laboratory analysis—there are a few simple checks that may help identify obvious adulteration.

While no home test can definitively certify that a ghee is pure—that requires laboratory analysis—there are a few simple checks that may help identify obvious adulteration.

 Observe The Texture
At room temperature, pure ghee usually has a smooth, grainy texture depending on the season. Excessively waxy, overly greasy or unusually sticky ghee may warrant a closer look, although texture alone cannot confirm purity.

Try The Palm TestPlace a small spoonful of ghee on your palm. Pure ghee melts quickly because of your body heat. If it remains solid for an unusually long time or leaves a waxy residue, it may contain added fats. However, ambient temperature can also affect the result.

Perform The Fridge Test
Refrigerate a small bowl of ghee for a few hours. Pure ghee generally solidifies uniformly. If you notice distinct layers or uneven solidification, it could suggest the presence of other oils or fats. This test is only indicative and not conclusive.

Look At The Colour—But Don't Judge By It Alone
Many people assume bright yellow ghee is purer, but colour naturally varies depending on the cow's diet and breed. Pure cow ghee can range from pale yellow to deep golden, so colour should never be the only factor in deciding quality.

Iodine Test For Starch: Add water and 1–2 drops of iodine to a spoon of ghee. If it turns blue, it may contain starch—a sign of adulteration. No colour change? Likely pure.

Overcooked Your Rice? Try These Easy Tips To Fix It- turn into Vadams/ curd rice/ fried rice !

Overcooked or mushy rice doesn't always have to end up in the bin. Whether you added too much water or cooked it a little too long, these simple tips can help improve its texture or make the most of it.

Spread the rice on a large plate or baking tray and let it cool for 10-15 minutes. This allows excess steam to escape, preventing it from becoming even softer.

Place the cooled rice in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes. Chilling helps firm up the grains, making them easier to use in other dishes.

Warm the rice in a pan over low heat without adding extra water. Stir gently to remove excess moisture without breaking the grains further.

If the rice is still very wet, place a clean paper towel over the bowl before covering it. The towel absorbs excess steam and moisture.

Mushy rice works surprisingly well for fried rice after it has been chilled. Cook it over high heat with vegetables, eggs and your favourite sauces for a tastier texture.

If the rice can't be rescued, use it in recipes where a softer texture works well, such as rice pudding and rice cutlets.

The mushy rice can be mixed with finely chopped onion, add ginger-green chili paste, salt to taste, lime juice if desired, mix well, drop small pieces on plastic sheet , allow it dry in the sun. ( don't make very small pieces, as once dry, they become too small)). At the end of the day, once you get it inside, turn the pieces, as the down sides will be wet. Again spread them in the sun for the next 3-4 days till completely dry. These vadams can be fried and served with different rice varieties.

Another easier way to use the mushy rice is make curd rice, adding thick curd, salt and season with mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves and finely chopped green chilies.

Healthy Breakfast On A Budget: This Combo Packs Protein, Fibre And Healthy Fats In One Bowl

Staying healthy isn't just about what you eat, it's also about when you eat. According to health experts, starting your morning with a small portion of nutrient-rich foods such as peas, peanuts and raisins may help nourish your body and keep you energised throughout the day.

Eating a moderate quantity of peas/moong dal, peanuts and raisins every morning may offer several health benefits. However, these foods should be consumed in moderation and as part of a balanced diet.

Peas are rich in protein, fibre and antioxidants. Experts say that eating sprouted peas on an empty stomach may support healthy digestion, provide sustained energy and help keep the body active. Their fibre content may also help lower bad cholesterol, support heart health, assist with weight management and help maintain balanced blood sugar levels.

Raisins are a good source of iron, potassium and antioxidants. Consuming them in the morning may help improve iron intake and support healthy haemoglobin levels. Their fibre may also help ease constipation, while their nutrients are believed to benefit heart health and bone strength.

Peanuts are an affordable source of protein. Eating them in limited quantities in the morning may provide lasting energy and help keep you feeling full for longer, reducing the urge to snack between meals .Peanuts also contain healthy fats, protein and magnesium, nutrients that may help support muscle strength and bone health. According to experts, their folate and vitamin E content may also contribute to brain function and support healthy skin and hair.

When eaten together, peas, peanuts and raisins provide a combination of protein, fibre, healthy fats and natural sweetness. Experts say this mix can be a nutritious addition to your breakfast, but it should be eaten in moderation as part of a varied and balanced diet.

People living with diabetes, kidney disease, food allergies or other medical conditions should consult a doctor or registered dietitian before making changes to their diet. These foods can support a healthy lifestyle but are not a substitute for medical treatment or prescribed medications.
