Best Egg substitutes and how to use them

Whether u do not have an egg for a recipe or just want to go vegan and not use any egg then replacing egg in your recipes can be tricky. But here are a variety of options u can use in place of egg in your baking.

Chia seeds

You will need –

  • 1 tbsp Chia seeds
  • 3 tbsp Water

Add chia seeds in water and mix them together really well. Set aside for 15 mins for the chia seeds to form a gel-like consistency. Use it in place of 1 egg in your vegan recipe. If the recipe calls for 2 eggs then just double the chia seeds and water. Do not use chia eggs in recipes more than 2 eggs. Works well for pancakes.

Chickpea – Chickpea flour is a great protein source and the perfect replacement for an egg in your recipe. To replace 1 egg, simply mix 3 tbsp of chickpea flour with 3 tbsp of water. Mix it well until you have a nice creamy and thick mixture. You may use the water in which you cook chickpeas or from the canned chickpeas tinem also you may use that water in stead of egg.

Apple sauce – Apple sauce makes for great egg replacements in sweet desserts. Replace 1 egg with 1/4 cup of unsweetened apple sauce. Best for cakes, brownies, and bars.

Here’s a tip: Use an extra ½ teaspoon of baking powder when using applesauce in replacement for eggs. This will benefit your recipe if you want a lighter texture of your baked items. Best to know how good your cake/ bread or brownie will turn out, once you finish mixing it all, take in your ladle or spoon and when you drop it, it shouldn't fall down quickly, then you need to add some flour. If too thick, add some more milk or curd to the mixture to get the correct consistency.

Nut butter – Nut butters like peanut, cashew or almond butter make an excellent egg replacement. Use 3 tbsp of nut butter in place of 1 egg in your recipe. Works best in pancake, cookies and brownie recipes.

Flax seeds

 You will need –

  • Flax seeds
  • Water

Grind the flaxseeds to a powder,  mix 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed meal with 3 tbsp of water. Mix until well combined, and let sit in your fridge for 15 mins to thicken. Best used for brownies, cakes, and bread. Otherwise also this flax seed powder is good to have in our porridge, cereals, as it has good nutrients.

Banana –Whenever I've a over-ripe banana, I mash it well, sprinkle some sugar and keep it in the frudge, the day I feel like baking I use it. To replace a whole egg in a recipe using 1 ripe banana. Mash banana well and use in place of an egg in your healthy brownie recipes. Use in your banana bread or muffins recipe.

Yogurt – Yogurt is a great substitute for egg, use 1/4 cup of yogurt for every egg in a recipe. It is best for egg-less sponge cakes.
