Separate Two Drinking Glasses

When two glass tumblers stick together, there is a danger of breakage in trying to separate them. The simplest and most effective method of releasing the glasses is to put cold water in the upper one and place the lower one in warm water. They will be found to separate at once.

Pick Up Broken Glass

To pick up broken glass quickly and cleanly, a soft damp cloth will be found to be most effective, for it takes up the small splinters. The best plan is to use an old rag that can be thrown away with the glass.

Such stains can be removed by washing the shoes over with a preparation composed of a piece of washing soda, about the size of a chestnut, dissolved in two tablespoons of hot milk. When dry, the shoes should be polished in the ordinary way, and the stains will be found to have disappeared.

Fill a large pail with water, and stand it a little above the level of the plants
and group round or near as many plants as practical. Loosely plait two or
three strands of wool together, immerse completely in water, and place one
end in the pail, weighted, and touching the bottom. Rest the other end on
the soil: a separate plait of wool is advisable for each pot.

  Recipe Books grease free
The kitchen is the logical place to store your recipe books of course - after all, it's the place where you are most likely to need them! However, your books are likely to pick up a disgusting layer of thick grease over time, leaving them feeling sticky and causing the pages to go crusty. If this happens to yours, sprinkle some baby powder over the books and leave it for an hour, before wiping away the powder to reveal cleaner pages. This can work with other cardboard and paper objects too; clean smaller items like playing cards by putting them in a sealed sandwich bag full of powder and giving them a shake.
Lift Oil Stains When you're frying up meat, you will often find that the pan spits out hot oil on to your clothes. These stains can be difficult to remove with water, but baby powder can help. You need to apply the powder on both sides of the stained fabric and leave it soak in. Hand-wash the item afterwards, and leave it to dry in open air. This should remove the stain!

Stop Rubber Gloves From Sticking Together

Before you wash your dishes, dust a sprinkling of baby powder over your rubber gloves to prevent them from sticking together. It's a good idea to apply some powder to your hands as well - this will make it easier to put the gloves on and leave your hands feeling nice and soft by the time you've finished your chores.

 Keep Pesky Ants Away
Ants are impressively resourceful and fascinating insects, but that doesn't mean you want them around your home. If you spot any popular ant hangouts around the house or garden, try sprinkling baby powder in the vicinity. They aren't keen on the scent and will stay away. This makes a great alternative to harmful, chemical repellents, especially around children.

We all make dosais almost everyday, but as now all are getting very health conscious, one always tries to make every food as healthy as possible.

For dosai
boiled rice( pulungal arisi)   4 cups
black urad dal   1 cup
methi seeds   2 tsp
salt to taste

Method
soak rice for 3 hours, just before grinding, wash the dal and grind with the rice adding water to make a smooth batter, add salt, leave it over-night to ferment, as this helps the B-complex vitamins to break down and makes it easy for digestion. This dosai will have a tinge of black colour, due to the dal. If you soak the dal, then the skin will come out, SO DON'T SOAK THE DAL.

For Kollu kurma
kollu 1 cup, soak over night, pressure cook well for 3-4 whistles with enough water, as it should be mash well once you press with your finger, if not keep for another 2-3 whistles
onion 1 big finely chopped
tomato 1 big finely chopped
green chilies 2-3 finely chopped
ginger 1" finely chopped
garlic 3-4 finely chopped ( optional)
curry leaves 1 sprig finely chopped
fresh coriander leaves finely chopped 2 tbsp
turmeric pdr.  1/4 tsp
salt to taste
jeera/cumin  1 tsp
hing 1/4 tsp
oil  2 tsp
In a pan/ kadai, add oil and jeera, once it crackles , add green chilies, ginger, garlic, curry leaves, fry for a minute along with hing
add onion, wee bit of salt, fry till light pink, add tomatoes, fry for 3-4 minutes, stirring well adding turmeric pdr. , add half the quantity of coriander leaves, add to the cooked kollu, add salt to taste, pressure cook for 2-3 whistles, once pressure goes, mix well, serve with rest of the coriander leaves sprinkled on top.
This goes well with dosai, idli, adai, roti, can be eaten with rice too.
Kollu is good for smooth skin, improves your stamina ( you know it is fed to the horses ! which have smooth skin and great stamina), rich in fibre. Garlic has anti-fungal, anti-cancer , anti-bacterial
properties. curry leaves are rich in Vitamin E good for hair and skin, hence I prefer it to be finely chopped and added,or else one always throws it away, losing its benefits. coriander leaves are rich in Vitmain C along with green chilies.

 Banana Bread
If you find your bananas become overripe, pop them in the freezer and save them until you have enough to make banana bread. When they defrost, they'll be mushy and ready for baking.

Berries
Keep your berries fresher by simply dipping them in vinegar before you refrigerate them. This works for strawberries, raspberries, mulberries, blackberries and blueberries.

Stale bread
No need to waste bread that's reaching its expiration date. Use stale bread to make croutons for soup or salad.

Sprouting potatoes

Onions cause potatoes to sprout quicker, so don't store them in the same place. On the other hand, if you add an apple to the potato sack, you can slow down the sprouting process.

Mayonnaise
Don't throw away your last bit of mayonnaise, turn it into instant salad dressing instead! Add olive oil, spices and fresh herbs or even some chopped onions. Put it all in a jar and shake.

Chocolate sauce

If you only have a drop of nut butter or chocolate sauce left, no need to waste it. Add cold or heated milk to the jar, stir and you've now got a tasty drink.

Herbs
Freeze excess herbs in butter or olive oil before they go bad. Defrost and use for recipes that require oil to start.

Syrups
Coat your measuring cups with oil before pouring syrups and other sticky substances. The oil will stop the syrup from clinging to the measuring cups and you can have accurate measurements rather than wasted ingredients.

Onions
Storing your onions in pantyhose can make them last much longer - up to 8 months in fact!

Nut butters- Prevent a thick line of oil from resting at the top of your natural butter by storing the jar upside down. The oil will stay at the bottom of the jar and the last bit of  your butter won't dry out and cleave to the base of the jar.

 Bananas
Prevent your fresh bananas from becoming brown too soon by wrapping the stems in plastic wrap

maida 1 cup

oil 2 tsp
boil water with salt and oil, switch off the gas, mix maida well, cover and keep for 10 minutes, then knead well. you can make kolakattai choppu quite thin, for steaming type. Light bulb Ok, so we expect this one is more for fun that anything else, but it's still fascinating and great for entertaining the kids/grandkids. Did you know that potatoes contain lots of energy, and the chemical reactions that take place between the potato juices and a couple of dissimilar metals create enough voltage to power a small electrical device?

To try this for yourself, you will need: 1 large potato, two small coins, two zinc-plated standard nails, three small pieces of copper wire and a small, low wattage light bulb:

1. Cut the potato in half, cut a slit in each half. Wrap the coins in the copper wire a few times, using different wire for each coin. Then slide the coins into the slits.

2. Take the remaining piece of copper wire and wrap it around one of the zinc plated nails. Stick the nail into one of the potato halves.

 3. Take the wire that's connected to the coin in the half of the potato that also contains the nail, and wrap it around the second nail. Stick the second nail into the other potato half.

4. Connect the two loose ends of the copper wire to the light bulb and it will light up.

Be careful when allowing children to handle the copper wires as they contain a small electrical charge, and don't perform the experiment near to an open flame.

Are your old tools or kitchen utensils starting to look like antiques? Restore them to former glories by chopping a potato in half, adding a liberal amount of soap or salt to the cut end and rubbing it over the affected surface. Rinse and dry the object thoroughly afterwards. This works great on along the edge of large carving knives!

If you have over-salted your pot of soup or pasta by mistake, then throw in some potato slices or cubes to restore the balance. Leave the potatoes in while the mixture simmers for ten minutes or so, and then scoop them back out.

The nutrients in potatoes will help your pot plants grown. You can either carve a small hole in the potato and plant the stem of the flower inside it, before putting the whole thing into the soil; or you can sprinkle some potato shavings into the soil around your already growing flowers to give them a fantastic, natural boost.

This use of potatoes is trumpeted by numerous sources! At some point in your life, you've probably faced the annoyance of a light bulb breaking as you attempt to unscrew it. You might be wondering why companies can't design bulbs that don't do this, but in the mean time, you have a trusty potato to help you deal with the problem. Cut the potato in half, and gently press the flat side on to the remainder of the bulb. When the bulb is firmly inserted, you can simply screw it out.

If your cutlery is cloudy and your trinkets are tarnished, why not use a potato to restore their sparkle? You can rub a raw potato over the items if you like, but I find it best to soak them in potato water. This also means you don't have to use extra potatoes to perform the task, simply use the water from the batch you have boiled for your dinner. Add any peeled skins into the water for great results.

Potatoes make for a terrific non-toxic glass cleaner. Take a raw, uncooked potato and rub if over your windows, car windscreen or even eye glasses, before wiping away the juice with a clean cloth. You will be left with gleaming glass, without damaging your hands or leaving the smell of chemicals up your nostrils.

Foods like turmeric, berries and beetroot are fabulous additions to any meal, but they have a habit of leaving their traces all over your hands. It can take a lot of scrubbing with normal soap to remove these stains, and it's really hard to reach underneath your nails. Don't fear though, just keep half a potato back when preparing the dish and rub it over the affected area to magically remove the blemish! Make sure you get right under your nails too. This will work well on grass and ink stains as well.
