Re-Grow These 10 Vegetables - Just Use Water!

Vegetables have all sorts of benefits, including their nutritional value and low price. But did you know that you get even more value out of your greens by replanting them? Most of the veggies you buy, such as lettuce and green onions, can actually be regrown using just water and some simple steps. Follow our tips and instructions to learn more about how you can have a constant supply of your favorite greens, without paying an extra penny.

First, here are some general guidelines to follow:

• Check the water regularly. Make sure that the water for each re-growing crop is checked to see that the quantity is healthy and that no rogue lettuce pieces fall off and slime up your bowl.

• Use a container of the right size. This should be relative to the size of the food being grown. For instance, green onion and lemongrass can grow in tall, narrow glasses, while lettuce and celery require more shallow containers. You may use recycled containers for this, such as glass jars, small vases, storage bowls and shot glasses. These can also make lovely centerpieces for your table, being practical at the same time.

• You can keep your little crops growing indoors. Anywhere close to a window would work fine.

• You may re-grow the same plant more than once, as long as the area does not get overcrowded. 1-2 green onions can fit in a shot glass and 3-4 lemongrass will fit in a small vase.

The following are 10 foods that re-grow using water alone

1. Leeks-
re-grow vegetables, water
Cut off 2-3" from the bottom of the leek stalk and place it in a cup of water. The center of the plant will start to grow. Although usually only the green part is used for cooking, you can still use the grown parts with onions - for instance - for some added flavor.

2. Bok Choy
re-grow vegetables, water
To re-grow bok choy, cut off the bottom of the stalk and place it in a small bowl of water. You will see signs of growth at the center after one or two days, and it can grow substantially in less than a week.

3. Cabbage
 re-grow vegetables, water
Pour some water in a shallow bowl and place the root end of the cabbage into it. In no time, the center will start to grow. It is recommended to harvest on the smaller side for the best flavor.

4. Carrot greens
re-grow vegetables, water
Replant the carrot by placing its cut-off end in a shallow bowl of water. This will not re-grow an actual carrot, but the greens it produces from the top. They will also look and taste good in your salad.

5. Celery

Cut off the celery stalk 2" from the bottom and place it in a small bowl of water. It will take three to four days until growth in the center becomes noticeable. It may take some time for a full stalk to grow, but you can always use the center growth to add flavor to dishes.

6. Fennel
re-grow vegetables, water
Cut off 1" from the bottom of the fennel base so that the roots are intact. Place it in a small bowl of water and watch it grow.

7. Garlic chives
re-grow vegetables, water
Re-growing garlic cloves will produce the green you can use with your salad dishes and baked potatoes. Place as few as one clove in a small cup of shallow water, without covering it completely. In a couple of days, you will get roots, then shoots will follow.

8. Lemongrass

Get new shoots from your lemongrass by cutting off 2-3" from its bottom and placing it in a tall container filled with 1/2" of water. Expect growth from the center.

9. Lettuce
re-grow vegetables, water
Grab a head of lettuce and cut off the bottom. Place it in a bowl of water and, in just 3 days, you will be able to see the growth occurring at the center. You will have a new half-head of lettuce in only about 2 weeks!

10. Green onion
re-grow vegetables, water
Grab the white part of the onion that has roots still intact and place it in a glass of water for an easy supply of fresh green onion, whenever you need it.

Bonus: Other foods
There are other fruits and vegetables that can re-grow using just a scrap of their original harvest and some water. Each of them need to be placed in water, at least to start off, and then can be transferred to soil for full growth and harvest.

More foods include:
• avocado
• basil
• beets
• cilantro
• ginger
• lemon balm
• mint
• mushrooms
 • onions (white/yellow/red)
• parsnips
• pineapple
• potatoes
• rosemary
• sweet potatoes
• turnips

Alternatively, you can keep the seeds or pits of some fruits and plant them in your garden to grow your very own plant or tree. Here are some fruits and vegetables you can do this with:
re-grow vegetables, water
• apples
• cherries
• lemons
• nectarines
• peaches
• peppers (sweet and hot)
• plums
• pumpkins
• tomatoes

17 Surprising Facts and Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Some of us just can't make it through the day without our cup of coffee, and I can't say it's hard to see why. People call coffee "the fuel of the modern man" as a joke, but it's not really too far from the truth. Take a look at any office during the morning hours and the majority of people will be drinking coffee. While I also love tea, there is still much to be said about the benefits and the facts you never knew about coffee:
1. Your body doesn’t need coffee when you wake up.
We naturally produce a hormone called cortisol which has a very similar effect to caffeine. This hormone is made at certain times of the day based on our circadian rhythm. It's important to identify the best time to drink your coffee so you can enjoy its maximum efficacy.

 2. Coffee isn’t as dehydrating as people think
Caffeine was once thought to be a significant diuretic, but it's really not true unless it’s consumed in large quantities. In fact, studies have shown that urine output isn’t significantly changed when a person drinks a caffeinated drink or a non-caffeinated drink. So as long as you enjoy your coffee in normal amounts, there’s no reason to fear dehydration.

3. The "powers" of coffee were discovered by goats
According to legend, Ethiopian shepherds were the first to notice the caffeinating effects of coffee. They were herding their goats in the area where the coffee plants grew and noticed their goats started “dancing” after eating coffee berries.

4. Coffee can lead to a longer and healthier life
 Coffee- Drink -Facts

Coffee has lots of antioxidants that help our body fight chemicals called “free radicals”. Thanks to that, coffee drinkers are at a lower risk of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Type II Diabetes, and certain heart problems. However, coffee drinkers are also more likely to have unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. The study shown above has been adjusted to show what could happen if these other factors weren’t in effect.

5. Coffee contains important nutrients.
A single cup of coffee contains 11% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin B2, 6% for vitamin B5, 3% of Manganese and Potassium, and much more. As long as you drink good coffee, with no added chemicals or too much sugar, you're doing your body a favor.

6. Coffee can help you burn fat.
Studies have proven that caffeine can increase your metabolism by 3% to 11%. It’s one of the few natural chemicals that have the power to encourage the process of burning fat.

7. All coffee is grown in "The Coffee Belt".
 Coffee- Drink -Facts

All the regions that have the conditions needed for coffee growing are located in The Coffee Belt. The plants require lots of sunshine and warmth and the tropical belt has plenty of those.

8. There's a reason why iced coffee is more expensive.
The resources needed for iced coffee are more numerous and expensive than your regular coffee drink. From plastic cups, extra napkins, double brewing, and extra electrical power to make it all work. Those things add up, and so establishments charge more for their iced drinks.

9. Caffeine is a crystal
The true form of caffeine isn’t liquid but rather tiny 0.0016-inch crystals. As small as they are, they still have a powerful energizing effect on us.

10. Coffee is great for your liver.
People who drink four cups of coffee a day are 80% less likely to develop cirrhosis, a condition that develops from several diseases affecting the liver. However, four cups of coffee is a lot, so don't drink that much. Even in smaller amounts, coffee can still help protect your liver.

11. Caffeine kicks in quickly
It takes as little as ten minutes for you to start feeling the effects of caffeine after you take a sip of coffee. It's one of the fastest effecting foods we eat and drink!

12. Coffee can help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Several studies have shown that people who drink coffee are up to 65% less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease, and, as a result, are also less likely to suffer from dementia.

13. The most expensive coffee on Earth is made from poop.
The most expensive coffee types in the world are made from beans that have been digested. Black Ivory costs $50 per cup and is made from elephant poo. Luwak, aka civet, coffee is made by feeding coffee beans to mongoose, it costs $160 per pound.

14. Coffee beans were once red berries
Coffee- Drink -Facts
Those red berries in the picture are the coffee berries, they grow on trees and from them, we get the coffee beans we need to make our favorite drink.

15. The first webcam in the world was invented for coffee.
The first known use of a webcam dates back to 1991, at the University of Cambridge. Scientists set a camera on their coffee pot and streamed the footage live on the web so that they would be able to see if the pot was empty or not. We should all be very happy that lazy people who want coffee exist in our world.

16. Coffee houses were once banned in England.
In 1675, King Charles II banned coffee shops and issued closing warrants, because he thought people were meeting in coffee houses to conspire against him.

17. Caffeine improves your performance when working out
Another benefit of caffeine is that it increases your levels of adrenaline and releases fatty acids from fat tissues. This leads to better physical performances by those who consume caffeine before working out.

Here Are 7 Signs a Watermelon is Bad

How many times have you brought a nice-looking watermelon from your local grocery store, only to discover that the fruit is soft, bitter, or lacking in sweetness? This is something that happens to the best of us, but it sure doesn’t have to! Below are 7 traits that indicate that the watermelon that you’re about to buy is bad:
Buying the Best Watermelon

1. It is Cracking and Has White or Black Spots
A melon that has white and black dots, or has a lot of cracking, could be afflicted with what is known as belly rot, a condition which is known to speed up the molding process. This rot will obviously affect the taste and can even end up making you sick.

2. It Feels Light
While carrying a light watermelon back to the car on a hot summer’s day may sound like an advantage to some, the most informed know that this is a sign of trouble. This is because a lightweight watermelon informs you that there’s not enough water inside the rind, which means that you’ll likely be met with a dehydrated fruit once you cut into it.

3. It Doesn’t Sound Right
When you knock on a watermelon, you’ll want to hear a hollow sound as this is a sure sign that the fruit is juicy and filled with water. On the other hand, if you hear a thud, it’s a dud.

4. The Stem is Green
When buying a watermelon it’s a good idea to take a close look at the stem. While a parched-looking stem might look like a warning, it’s actually a good thing as it means that the fruit is ready to eat. If it has a rich green stem, the fruit definitely needs some more time to ripen.

5. It’s Too Good Looking
Watermelons that have flawless rinds are not the ones to go for. If a melon is devoid of webbing, then it means that the fruit didn’t receive enough pollination. Though this won’t necessarily result in an inedible watermelon, it could mean that your fruit won’t be as sugary sweet as it should be. Sometimes, ugly is better!

6. It’s Too Long
While watermelons with long bodies are not necessarily bad for eating, rounder ones are generally much sweeter.

7. It Has a Big White Spot
When you turn over your watermelon you should see what is known as a field spot. The sweetest melons have a yellowish color on their underside – the darker, the better. However, keep in mind that a white spot is better than no spot at all.

Foods That Can be Microwaved!

You might be surprised to learn that your microwave can do so much more than just heating up frozen dinners. With these clever microwave hacks, you can unlock its full potential and discover how versatile this handy kitchen appliance can be. From softening sugar to frothing milk, whipping up French toast, and beyond, these hacks will transform the way you use your microwave.

1. Peel Garlic Quickly

Microwave

Nuke your garlic bulbs for 15 seconds and the skin will slide off like magic. This is because the water in the garlic steams and breaks down the bonds that exist between the clove and the skin for fast removal.

 2. Rescue Stale Bread
If you have forgotten to completely close your bagel or bread bag, simply wrap the loaf in a moist paper towel and zap it for twenty seconds. The moisture in the towel will soak into the bread, making it fresh again, but not soggy.

3. Juice Fruit with Ease
Before juicing a lemon or orange, microwave the uncut fruit for ten seconds. The microwave will loosen the fibers inside the fruit and make it easier to juice every last drop!

4. Toast Nuts Fast
Microwave
Put a handful of nuts in a microwave-safe bowl, toss with some oil, and microwave in 60-second increments, stirring after every minute. Overall cooking time depends on the type of nut, but expect it to take around 5 minutes.

5. De-clump Brown Sugar
When your brown sugar is as hard as a rock, try this. Moisten a paper towel, place it in the sugar bag, then zap in the microwave for 25 seconds. The moisture from the towel will transfer to the sugar and make it easier to scoop.

6. Smooth Crystallized Honey If your glass jar of honey has crystallized in the back of your cupboard, simply remove the lid, and heat it in the microwave for 30-40 second increments until it returns to its original smooth texture.

7. Peel Veggie Skin Faster
Microwave
Hard root vegetables and squashes can be tough to peel. To make your job easier, place the vegetable in your microwave for 2-3 minutes on power and the skin should become more pliable for peeling and cutting – just be careful when removing the hot veggie so you don’t burn your skin.

8. Cook Crispier Bacon
Place a bowl upside down on a plate. Drape the bacon strips over the bowl, then microwave for one minute per slice of bacon. As its grease drips onto the plate, the bacon will become mouth-wateringly crispy.

9. Froth Milk
You don’t need an expensive cappuccino to froth your milk. Instead, pour some milk into a mason jar, no more than half full (to leave room for foam). Screw on the lid and vigorously shake for 30 to 60 seconds. The milk will turn to froth. Remove the lid and microwave for 30 seconds so the foam rises.

10. Concoct French Toast
Care for some tasty brunch? Rub a pat of butter on the bottom of a mug; fill to the top with chopped bread. In a separate cup, mix 1 egg, 3 tablespoons milk, and a sprinkle of cinnamon with a fork. Pour the mixture into the cup and microwave for one minute.

11. Soften Collard Greens
Microwave
Collard greens make delicious, healthy wraps, but are prone to cracking and splitting when stiff. To relax a leaf for a wrap, wash well and microwave for ten seconds.

12. Flavor Butter
Try this twist on classic bread and butter. Microwave 1 stick of cubed unsalted butter for 30-second intervals, until melted. Add a pinch of salt and fresh sage leaves. Continue heating in 30-second intervals until fragrant. Drizzle on bread for an earthy, savory flavor.

13. Break hard gur/ jaggery
Normally the jaggery we buy comes in hard round shape and difficult to break. Earlier, I used to hammer it. Then found an easier way to microwave the jaggery by tearing the rapper for 1 minute in high power. Most jaggery then you can cut into pieces with a knife. If not microwave for another 30 seconds not more.

14. Roast chips or puffed rice/ pori
At times due to humidity, your chips or pori may get soft, then spread it on a micro safe plate for a minute, it will become crisp.

15. Soften bread
My grandsons don't like toasted bread. I put the slices with butter in the microwave for 20-30 seconds depending on the number of slices, the butter can be spread easily, they'll get warm soft bread to eat !

16. Reheating foods
Whether it is rice or veges that I want to quickly reheat, I spread in a micro safe plate for a minute.
