Homemade Drain Cleaners That Provide Great Results

Few things can be as annoying as finding your bathroom or kitchen sink flooding up with water and refusing to drain. While the old-school plunger might solve the problem at times, it’s not always effective. The drains in the bathroom and the kitchen are filled with soap scum, hair, toothpaste, grime, and food crumbs, and can often form an almost impenetrable clog. Using harsh chemicals might provide results but they can damage your drain pipes in the long run.

A better and safer alternative would be to use some natural cleaners like baking soda, borax, vinegar, and salt. When used properly, they can be surprisingly efficient in unclogging the drains of your house. Let’s take a look at some of the natural homemade drain cleaners that can get you great results.

1. Baking Soda and vinegar
Homemade Drain Cleaners,
Vinegar and baking soda are both used often to clean a variety of household items. They are also effective in unclogging sinks - this is a tried and tested formula that has been proven to work on kitchen and bathroom drains. The method is quite easy to follow, too.
* Mix 1/3 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of vinegar in a measuring cup.
* Pour it down the drain immediately as the mixture will start to fizz instantly.
* Plug the drain and let the mixture sit in the drain for about 45 minutes to an hour. The fizzing action is exactly what helps get rid of the grime or hair from the drain.
* Now, unplug the drain and pour a pot of boiling water down it to flush the mixture and other stuff from it.
* Keep pouring the hot water until the drain is clear.

2. Baking soda and salt
Homemade Drain Cleaners, 1. Baking Soda and vinegar

Baking soda is known to be effective in unclogging a sink when mixed with salt.

* Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda and salt in a bowl and pour the mixture into the drain.

* Let the mixture sit for about an hour. If the drain is overstuffed, you can even leave the mixture overnight.

* Now, pour boiling water down the drain. When hot water comes into contact with this mixture of salt and baking soda, it creates an aggressive chemical reaction that will be strong enough to unclog even some of the most stubborn bathroom sink blockages.

3. Liquid dish soap and boiling water
This method is particularly useful for clearing grease clogs from your kitchen sink. The boiling water and dish soap mixture heats the grease and melts it back into liquid form. Then it can be easily pushed out of the pipe. This mixture is also good for mild blockages in all kinds of sinks.

* Boil about two liters of water and mix in a few tablespoons of liquid dish soap.

* Pour the mixture down the sink. You might have to repeat the process a few times if the grease is a little thick in the drain.

* Pouring just boiling water too works surprisingly well for clearing certain bathroom clogs. For stoppages due to soap scum, in particular, this might really do the trick. Pour the water into the drain three or four times and you should see immediate results.

4. Salt, borax, and vinegar
Homemade Drain Cleaners, Salt, borax, and vinegar
Sometimes, baking soda and vinegar aren’t enough to clear your drain of hair and grease. In that case, you might have to look for a more potent cleaning product, like borax. Borax is the favorite laundry cleaner in many homes as it's very efficient in eliminating odors. It can also be used to unclog the sink when mixed with salt and vinegar.

* Mix 4 tablespoons of borax, 4 tablespoons of salt, and ½ cup of vinegar together.

* Pour the mixture down the drain and let it sit for an hour.

* Follow it with a pot of boiling water to clear all ingredients down the drain.

7 Simple Ways to Clean Kitchen Items

The kitchen is likely to be the most used room in the house, and consequently, can get dirty pretty quickly. Despite regular cleaning, there are some items that do not get cleaned as well. While there are multiple ways for you to clean everything, some work better than others. Below, we have gathered seven of the most irritating kitchen items to clean, offering two different tricks for some. Take a look:

1. Pan Gunk cleaning kitchen items
How many times have you ended up with leftover food that has burned on your pans? Pan gunk can be quite hard to remove. But some baking soda, cream of tartar and dish soap, ought to do the trick, leaving your pan look like new again.

A second alternative for getting the gunk off pans and other kitchen items is to use baking soda, without the dish soap and the cream of tartar, in favor of hydrogen peroxide. The reaction of these two ingredients together will get that gunk up in no time, leaving you with sparkling clean pans.

 2. Wood Cutting Boards
Keep your wood cutting boards clean by using a lemon and some coarse salt. Scrubbing the board using both. While it may seem unusual at first, it is the best way to clean those wood boards. Cleaning the boards with too much water can cause them damage while using harsh cleaning chemicals can sink into the wood. For this reason, it is best that you avoid both.

3. Greasy kitchen dust   cleaning kitchen items
It may be hard to reach the top of the cabinets or the fridge, dust loves to accumulate up there and the easiest way to do so is with wax paper, as opposed to a step ladder or long-handled duster. Simply line the top of your cabinets with wax paper causing the dust to accumulate there, making cleaning up easy.

4. Stainless steel
If you've got a stainless steel fridge you may notice how easy it is for it to get smudged and look grimy. A general washing can leave streaks and may not eliminate fingerprints. To keep your fridge spotless you can use an unlikely method: Pledge - which doesn't just work to clean and polish wood. In fact, pledge is great for stainless steel as well.

If you are unsure about using a wood cleaner on stainless steel, you can use white distilled vinegar, which also works wonders at removing build up, streaks and fingerprints and is cheaper than Pledge. However, it may not shine as much.

5. Hard Water Stains
When something comes in contact with water it can develop hard water stains. Things like faucets and bathroom fixtures are more prone to these stains than others, however, anything that has water drying or sitting on it is susceptible. If you just soak the item in vinegar for a while, those hard water stains will wipe off easily.

However, there are some things which cannot be soaked in vinegar as easily. For such items, use a lemon instead. All that you will need to do is rub half a lemon on the stains, leaving the citric acid to do the rest.

6. Fridge Shelves
Want to keep nasty spills and sticky messed off your fridge shelves? Line them with plastic wrap or Press N Seal. You will just need to change it out every now and then preventing you from having to scrub those shelves or deal with leakages.

If the idea of using lining is not to your liking, you can get reusable fridge liners, like coasters and place them in your fridge as you line the shelves. They work in the same way and periodically you will need to wash them instead of tossing them out.

7. Microwave cleaning kitchen items
It's impossible to cook in a microwave without it getting dirty. Food will generally splatter leaving a mess in the microwave. But there is an easy way to go about cleaning it and removing any gunk. Just put a lemon and some water in the microwave and switch it on, allowing any food scraps to loosen up.

If you do not have any lemons on hand you can use vinegar. However, one of the cons of using this method is the smell of vinegar in your kitchen afterward. Nevertheless, it's a lot better than having to spend a lot of time scrubbing your microwave.

Are You Eating Fake Ginger? Here’s How You Can Identify The Real Ginger

Will the real pungent ‘Ginger’ please stand up? The humble ginger (adrak) is the most common kitchen ingredient, which is found in almost every household. Ginger is the most common ingredient in many curries, tea. The root has been widely used in cookies, chocolates, cocktails, and even medicines. Even if you have never tried this knobbly sand-coloured root, there are many chances that you must be familiar with the flavor and the strong smell. People often describe its taste as spicy, warm, and sharp.

Since the onset of the Coronavirus, people shifted to ginger decoction to boost their immunity and fight the deadly coronavirus. But did you know fake ginger is selling like wildfire in markets these days? As much as we hate adulteration, it is difficult to escape it if there is a lack of awareness. Consuming fake ginger can hamper your health. Follow these tricks to identify the difference between fake ginger and real ginger.

Difference between fake ginger and real ginger:

Understanding the difference between ginger root and ginger: If you are out in the market to buy groceries and ginger is on the list, then the first step to identify the real ginger is by sniffing it. The smell of ginger is pungent and sharp, whereas fake ginger has no smell. Vegetable vendors often sell mountain roots that look exactly like ginger to make money.

Check the ginger peel: Pay attention to the peel. You can prick nails in the ginger, the peel will drop off and the pungent smell will stay in your hands. If the skin of the ginger is hard, do not buy it.

Beware of clean ginger: Do not opt for clean ginger. Many people like to buy clean ginger to save time washing them at home. But you must not do that as sellers often use acid to clean ginger, in such a scenario, you must avoid buying it.

Mango halwa

I bought 3 big mangoes, which were half-yellow, with the assumption, it will ripe in 3-4 days.

But, it started getting black spot on top. I paid a lot as it is off-season for mangoes. Didn't want to waste it, so peeled it, cut into small pieces and kept in a ziplock in the fridge, as I was feeling very tired that day.

Next day, in the pressure pan, added the mango pieces, which was one big bowl full, added roughly 500ml of milk and sugar to taste, mixed well, kept it on low flame stirring from time to time.

Once the pieces got cooked well and the milk had reduced, I added 4 heaped tablespoon on cornflour, mixed with little milk to a smooth paste, added it to the cooking mango mixture to thicken it, at this stage kept continuously stirring or else it will form lumps.

added about 2 tbsp ghee, in parts, once it left the sides of the pan, spread it on a greased plate. Once it was set, I'ld cut into pieces.
